Windows 8 Pro UpgradeWhen Windows 8 was released late last year, one of the novel aspects of the new operating system was its availability as an online download; even more impressive was the low price for this online version – $39 for an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro, a version of the OS normally priced $199.

But that promotion ends today.  If you want to snag up to five upgrade copies of Windows 8 Pro for $39 each, you’ll have to do so before the end of the day today

Tomorrow they’ll be an extra $160.

In a new MSDN blog post roughly one-third the length of the Book of Genesis, Microsoft explains how the Windows UI was created.  After a “brief” history of the subject, the post moves on to the look and feel of the new Windows 8 desktop and the rationale for the changes. 

In short – and after reading the post, short is a blessing – Windows 8 will be flattened out:

The New SkyDrive is LiveI’ve been a SkyDrive users for years, which is to say I’ve had an account and tinkered with it from time to time.  Its 25GB of free online storage was generous, but without syncing or integration with Windows or the Mac OS, also largely useless.  I have, though, been a daily and evangelistic user of Dropbox, a service that – perhaps more than any other – has changed the way I’ve worked over the last few years.  Dropbox was what SkyDrive should have been from the jump.

But I’m happy to report that Microsoft today unveiled major, but not surprising, changes to SkyDrive that make it not only useful, but a service that Dropbox will actually have to compete with.  Competition is good, though, so I’m happy not only to report the changes that Microsoft has made to its online storage service, but also improvements that will surely come from Dropbox as it responds to Microsoft’s seismic SkyDrive revamp.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview (Beta)

Microsoft has posted installers for the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.  Available in both 32-and-64bit versions, this is a preview of what’s to come later this year when Windows 8 is released.
