Android Smartphone microSDXC Memory Card Support Information

SanDisk and a few other flash memory card makers have quietly released a new class of microSD memory cards called microSDXC. These new cards double the maximum storage capacity of previous microSDHC memory cards - up to 64GB from 32GB – though microSDXC offers a theoretical limit of 2TB per card.

But support for the new microSDXC cards remains limited, particularly among smartphone hardware makers.

At this point, there are only a few Android-powered phones that support microSDXC, including the Samsung Galaxy SII handsets and the HTC Sensation 4G (see more below).

Users may need to format the SDXC cards using the built-in memory card format utility in order for them to work, however.

The frustrating thing about microSDXC support is that it’s seemingly being kept secret by device makers, perhaps because the technology is so new. At present, compatibility information is coming more from users than hardware companies, which may limit adoption by users of compatible handsets.

SanDisk is currently selling a 64GB microSDXC memory card, as is Kingmax.  The second is far less expensive.

We’ll keep this page updated as new compatibility information is made available, both from end users and via official channels.  If you have information regarding microSDXC compatibility with your Android smartphone or tablet, please email us or post a comment here.
