How to Soft Reset & Hard Reset the Palm Treo 800w

There are two types of resets for the Windows Mobile Palm Treo 800w Smartphone: Soft Resets and Hard Resets.

Soft Reset

A Soft Reset stops all active (or open) programs and "reboots" the handheld, much like restarting your PC. When the Treo powers back up, you'll start with all programs closed and the unit will be ready to use. The soft reset is intended to reset the Treo if it is malfunctioning or has become bogged down.

The Palm Treo 800w can be soft reset by removing and replacing the battery in your Treo.  The reset begins as soon as the battery is replaced.

The Palm Treo 750 can be soft reset by quickly pressing and releaseing the tiny red button beneath the miniSD memory card door.

Hard Reset

A Hard Reset wipes the internal memory and returns the Treo to its factory specs, in effect returning the Treo 800w to the state it was in when you purchased it. All data entered, preferences set or software installed on the Treo after purchase will be lost after a hard reset and will have to transferred or reinstalled via ActiveSync / Windows Mobile Device Center.

The Palm Treo 800w can be hard reset by following this procedure:

1) Remove the battery as described in the diagram above.

2) With the battery removed, press and hold the End/Power button (seen left) and reinsert the battery.  When the screen displays the Palm logo, release the End/Power button.  After a few moments you'll be presented with a screen which asks Erase All Data?  Press Up on the four-way navigation pad to confirm. The hard reset will complete.

The Treo will now be as it was when it left the factory and you can start fresh.
