Tutorial: How to Move TiVo Recordings to a Pocket PC

Part 3 - TiVo Recordings on Your Pocket PC

So, you have transcoded and transferred the TiVo recordings from your PC to you Pocket PC with Windows Mobile 10.  You're now ready to watch on the go!  But, how do you find the files that have been transferred and what do you need to begin watching?

Part 3 of this tutorial is for those of you who are unfamiliar with Windows Media Player 10 Mobile.  We'll walk you through accessing and playing files andupdating your Library.  Finally, we'll give you a few tips on transferring and using large video files.

Step 5: Windows Media Player 10 Mobile

On your Pocket PC, open the Windows Media Player.  Our Dell Axim X50v is running Windows Mobile 5.0.

The first step is to update the Library with our new recording.  To do this, simply tap Menu then Library.  When viewing the Library, tap the Menu button again and select "Update Library..."

Update Your Pocket PC's Media Library with New Files...

Windows Media Player will scan your internal memory and flash memory card(s) for compatible multimedia files (audio, video, etc.).  When complete, the newly transferred video will be added to the My Videos > All Video listing.

The transferred file is now loaded into the Library listings...

To play the video, just highlight the file and click Play

Ahhh... Lost

Parting Thoughts

As you've seen in this tutorial, transferring content to a flash memory card through your Pocket PC's Windows PC connection is actually quite simple.  However, most Pocket PC's connection to a PC is via USB 1.1, a relatively slow connection.  A much faster way to move files to and from a Secure Digital or CompactFlash card is with a USB 2.0 flash memory card reader.

Flash memory card readers are inexpensive and offer much faster transfer rates than your Pocket PC's USB 1.1 connection.  When selecting a flash memory card reader, make sure that it's USB 2.0 (if your system supports this high-speed connection), and also look for a reader that supports multiple card formats; this way, your reader can be used to read and write from and to more flash memory cards than those supported by your Pocket PC.

While the process in this tutorial will work for any Pocket PC meeting the listed requirements, some Pocket PCs may render video better than others.  Our test Pocket PC, the Dell Axim X50v, has a graphics processor onboard to help it render video, so videos play more smoothly than on some other Pocket PCs.
