Windows Mobile 6.1?

October 22, 2007 - A recent posting on a Dutch web site may reveal some of Microsoft's future plans for the popular Windows Mobile OS.  A screenshot posted there (seen left) shows a completely revamped Windows Mobile interface similar to that developed for the Treo 500v, a so-called "carousel" with menu selections across the top of the screen and detailed information presented below. According to pocketinfo.nl, this new interface will be part of Windows Mobile 6.1, which the site expects to be announced early next year and to begin shipping in May 2008.

Earlier this month, the::unwired revealed that Microsoft had filed a patent for just such an interface.  The patent was entitled "Extensible Filtered Lists for Mobile Device User Interface" and showed a simpler version of the carousel interface seen in the screenshot above.

An interface based on scrolling selection bars and drop-down information might prove a worthy direction for the Windows Mobile OS, which has employed the same basic menu structure since its introduction.  Such a shift would also position the OS for better competition with newer mobile operating systems like that running the Apple iPhone.

It should be noted that all information concerning Windows Mobile 6.1 (even the idea that there may be such a release) is currently rumor and has not been verified by Microsoft.
