The letter goes on to state that the Foleo will re-emerge when the new Linux-based OS is complete, though this comes just over three months after the Foleo was first announced with enthusiasm by Palm co-founder Jeff Hawkins at a widely-covered press event.
The 2.5-pound Foleo, formerly code-named "Hawk," was essentially a low-power laptop computer, with a 10-inch display, a full-sized QWERTY keyboard, and both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless technologies. Intended to serve as an extension of the Treo smartphone, the Foleo would have allowed users to to compose e-mails, edit MS Office documents, and browse the Internet in a more traditional fashion.
Palm now sells smartphones running both the Garnet (formerly known as the Palm OS) and Windows Mobile operating systems. The company has been working to switch from Garnet to to a Linux-based OS since late 2004. That new operating system, often referred to as the Palm OS II, does not yet have a specific release date.
