Microsoft Silverlight

March 6, 2008 - Sometime in the second half of 2008, Microsoft plans to release Silverlight 1.0 for Mobile, a slimmed down, mobile-specific version of its desktop multimedia plug-in. Complete details are not yet available, though we do know that Silverlight for Mobile will be available for Windows Mobile devices and that it will be, at least initially, compatible with Silverlight version 1.0, not the recently-announced Silverlight v.2.0.

Microsoft describes Silverlight as a "cross-browser, cross-platform, and cross-device plug-in" which supports video and audio playback within a web browser, much like Adobe's Flash.  In fact, Microsoft designed Silverlight to take Flash head on, though it is unclear how well developers and users will take to the new alternative.

On its Silverlight web site, Microsoft explains that "[s]upport for Silverlight on devices will quickly help change the landscape for the types of user experiences consumers can expect from their phones by bridging rich interactivity, wireless data, media and more."
