‘Virus Battery’ Could Power Future Handheld Devices

Bacteriophage Battery Makers

Viruses have plagued mankind since before recorded history, but we’ve only been studying the little buggers since they were first identified in the late nineteenth century.  That 100+ years of study has yielded many benefits; scientists have not only learned how to protect us from many of their devastating effects, they’ve begun to use viruses to help us, too.

The latest human-friendly virus? A genetically engineered bacteriophage redesigned to create a new generation of nanowire batteries.  Essentially, these tamed viruses are set loose, given a supply of battery-making materials and a friendly production environment.  The results: a battery that could outlast our current Li-Ion batteries three times over.

This M13 virus was designed by Angela Belcher and her team at MIT, and the batteries the virus make possible not only promise longer life for our battery-powered gismos and machines (MP3 players, cell phones, computers and even cars), they’re also more environmentally friendly to produce than today’s batteries.  In addition, these new batteries can be “very lightweight, flexible, and [able to] take the shape of their container.”

So far, the team has only built a prototype good for 100 charges, but this could be the start of something great for mobile devices.  And the so-called “molecular production process” employed for this type of battery could spread to many other types of computing hardware as well.

President Obama to Adopt Windows Mobile?

January 15th, 2009 RSSFeed Posted in Outside the Box No Comments »

Yes He Can!

President-Elect Obama is a well-known BlackBerry addict and has expressed more than a little anxiety about being forced to give up the mobile messenger when he officially becomes #44.

Now, in what is sure to send Apple fanboys into a psychological tailspin (they’re already apoplectic that he’s not using an iPhone), some are suggesting Mr. Obama could adopt a more secure handset, namely General Dynamics’ $3300 Sectéra Edge, which the NSA has certified “as being acceptable for Top Secret voice communications and Secret e-mail and Web sites."

The Obama adoption of Windows Mobile isn’t official, but it is interesting that a Windows Mobile device may be the only solution that can serve the world’s most powerful person.

If true, maybe it’ll force Microsoft to work on its outdated UI since its business and security credentials will be on such solid ground.

Live Mesh Now Open, Still Missing WinMo Goodness

July 16th, 2008 RSSFeed Posted in Cloud Tech, Outside the Box 1 Comment »

Microsoft’s Live Mesh, a Cloud-based file storage and syncing system, is out of beta and now labeled as a “Technical Preview” service, which basically means they’ve raised the number of users who can sign up for Mesh.

Over the coming weeks, Mesh will continue to be tweaked and improved.  One still-missing (but very welcome) feature is Windows Mobile support, which will allow you to sync and access stored files from a Windows Mobile handheld.

A totally Cloud-based, Mesh-like syncing solution would be an excellent addition to Windows Mobile 7, don’t you think?
