The first Nextel iDEN Android smartphone, the Motorola i1, is now available from Sprint/Nextel.
The Motorola i1 is the first and only Android-powered smartphone compatible with Nextel Direct Connect. Other features include a 3.1-inch HVGA touchscreen display, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 5MP camera. There's also a microSDHC memory card slot onboard.
The i1's construction "meets military specifications for protection against dust, shock, vibration and blowing rain."
These construction choices may explain some details of the Moto i1 which are a bit disappointing. First, it will ship with Android v1.5, which is dated. Second, the i1 relies on the iDEN network for data connectivity, so outside of Wi-Fi coverage, data rates will be relatively low. Last, Motorola has opted for a 2.5mm headset jack rather than a standard 3.5mm audio port.
The Motorola i1 sells for $149 with a two-year service agreement from Sprint, but you can find much lower prices from the third-party retailers below. The i1 is also available as a pre-paid Android phone from Boost Mobile.
