BlackBerry Pearl 8100 (T-Mobile)
Released in Q3 2006, the BlackBerry Pearl was Research In Motion's first true smartphone, which signaled a move away from their boxy wireless data systems of the past. The Pearl, so named for its pearl-shaped trackball, was designed to be smaller and lighter than previous BlackBerry devices, and was enhanced with new features like an onboard digital camera and multimedia functionality. Subsequent handhelds from RIM built on the success of the Pearl, most notably, the BlackBerry Curve and the upcoming Pearl 2.
The BlackBerry Pearl is currently sold by T-Mobile and AT&T Mobile. Both devices are powered by the Intel XScale mobile processor and feature 64MB of internal memory, a microSD flash card reader for additional storage, a 240x260 high-resolution color display, Bluetooth 2.0 and EDGE network compatibility.
Of course, the Pearl is a BlackBerry device, so it features the tried-and-true BlackBerry e-mail experience, now coupled with a web browser and out-of-the-box audio playback.
If there is a sacrifice to be made by choosing the Pearl, it's the keyboard. RIM was forced to nix their classic QWERTY keyboard on the Pearl to save space. What you'll get is a SureType keyboard/keypad hybrid, which you may or may not be happy with.
