The MX3100 keyboard is perfect for typing, software shortcuts or even multimedia use. The MX1000 mouse is an optical mouse, but it's not one of those red-LED optical mice; it uses a laser to detect movement resulting in sensitivity 20X that of traditional optical mice.
With extensive daily use, we know that the Logitech MX3100 stands up to the test of time. The keyboard batteries last months and months, and the MX1000 laser mouse lasts weeks before needing to be recharged in the included charging cradle, though you can certainly place the mouse back in the charging cradle each time you're finished using your PC.
